Amazingly, the skin is constantly renewing itself. The largest organ in the body, it shed dead cells every day, and creates an entirely new surface layer of skin every 28 days. The skin produces natural oils to keep itself regulated and exfoliated, but cosmetic exfoliators are often useful to help remove dead cells from the surface of the skin, particularly around the face.
That said, exfoliation should always be gentle and not overly frequent, as it can inadvertently strip the skin of much-needed natural oils. Knowing your skin type is important when it comes to exfoliation, as those with sensitive skin may only wish to gently exfoliate once a week to avoid undue stress to the skin, while those with acne-prone or oilier skin may benefit from twice-weekly exfoliation, to help regulate the skin’s surface.
